Lunar vs. Solar Calendars — The Anthropology of East Asian Time

Why the lunar calendar still anchors East Asian fortune-telling, holidays, and agriculture — from astronomy, agricultural history, and cultural anthropology.

Most East Asians still live in two calendars Lunar New Year in Korea (Seollal), China (Chunjie), and Vietnam (Tết) all follow the lunar reckoning. The solar (Gregorian) calendar runs the office; the lunar calendar runs the **rituals** — weddings, ancestor rites, fortune readings, moving days.

The astronomy — a lunation lasts 29.53 days The lunar calendar tracks the moon's synodic cycle. Because 12 lunations are only ~354 days, East Asian calendars are properly **lunisolar**: an intercalary month is added 7 times every 19 years to keep the lunar count synchronised with the solar year and its seasons.

The 24 solar terms — the bridge to agriculture The 24 *jeolgi* (solar terms) are defined by the sun's position on the ecliptic, every 15°. Saju practitioners determine the **month pillar** by these solar terms, not by the lunar month number — which is why proper Saju computation depends on solar-term conversion, not just date conversion (Seo, 2010).

Why fortune-telling holds onto the lunar calendar Fortune-telling traditions trace back to early astronomy: the moon and visible planets offer a richer set of cyclic markers (new/full, eclipses, conjunctions) than the solar day. What it felt like to actually try this I (one of us on the Enutrof team) grew up with two birthdays — my mother always celebrated the lunar one, and my official documents use the solar one. Writing this piece, I ran my own Saju twice on Enutrof: once with the lunar date as input, once with the solar date entered incorrectly as if it were lunar. I wanted to see how much the output actually changes.

It changed more than I expected. So which version was "really me"? Honestly, I couldn't claim either was objectively correct. What I could say was that my family ran my birthdays, ancestral rites, and milestone ceremonies on the lunar calendar, so my felt sense of identity-time sits there. The point of the article — that Saju doesn't just consume a date, it sits on top of a ritual and cultural time-system — became very concrete when I saw two competing portraits of myself produced by the same tool.

One practical note I'll keep: whenever I or anyone I know enters birth data into a Saju app, I now check the lunar/solar label twice and ask a parent if the time of birth is anywhere near a solar-term boundary. Solid input is the cheapest, most honest improvement you can make before taking any reading seriously.
